Programs

 

Religion and Western Civilization—A multi-year program dedicated to developing a variety of materials that colleges and universities can use to provide a better understanding of the importance of religion to the development of the West.

Character and Culture—The moral decay of the country concerns Americans today more than issues of politics and economics. This program explores ways to renew the personal and social virtues such as independence, self-reliance, and solidarity that have made America a great and unique nation.

Law and Religion—From charitable choice to problems of expressions of religion in the public arena, legal battles loom for those who wish to see our constitutional guarantees of free exercise take a more effective form.  This program aims to illuminate the opportunities offered by developing legal opinion.

Alternatives to Public Education—At a time when public schools are increasingly being asked to improve, this program examines alternatives—public as well as private, religious and non—as a means to give all parents in the United States a choice of the kinds of schools best for their children.

Catholicism and the American Public Square—A multi-year program to study the Catholic Church’s civic engagement in America on issues such as religious liberty and free exercise, Catholic education, the virtue tradition, natural law, family, and feminism.  In 2000, the project also carried out a detailed and comprehensive survey of Catholics, specifically focusing on voting patterns and views on public issues.  For more information, visit American Catholics in the Public Square.

Religion and Globalization—The current debate over the promises and perils of globalization has been largely shaped by economic and political interests.  This project tries to bring spiritual traditions with long histories of balancing international and national interests to bear on contemporary problems.
